Design and characterization of a test stand for flow measurement

A current research question is the flow behavior of cooling lubricant during the supply in grinding processes. The particle image velocimetry (PIV) method is to be used. For this purpose, particles are fed to the coolant flow whose movements are measured by cameras. The flow velocity can be determined from the particle movements. The turbulent flow generates diffuse scattering cooling lubricant droplets especially in the impact area. The refractive index of the cooling lubricant generally differs from air. This leads to light ray deflection, which results in deviations in the particle images and ultimately in the measured velocity.

In the course of this work, a test stand is to be constructed. A cylinder is to be flowed with a liquid. This flow shall be measured by PIV. In addition, the influence of the resulting refractive index field of the fluid on the PIV measurements shall be be investigated. The resulting deviations shall be used for an estimation of the uncertainty of measurement PIV measurement and possibly for a correction of the measured velocity.
